Jimmy? Hi, This Is Kate. Jimmy? Jimmy?
What was the most unsurprising line in Kate Kelly's WSJ scoop last night that Jimmy Cayne will be stepping down as CEO at Bear Stearns?
Mr. Cayne, who turns 74 years old on Feb. 14, didn't return a phone call seeking comment.
Imagine that. Recall that it was Kelly who authored the new-era skinning of the Bear boss, authoring the 3,000-plus words on Cayne's recreational life that greatly intensified the chatter that he needed to go. Even so, given that Cayne owns a big chunk of the firm and that he will continue to serve as chairman, it's unlikely that the "people familiar with the matter" who tipped Kelly (and confirmed for other reporters) did so without Cayne's endorsement.
Once Bear Stearns formally confirms, Jack Flack hopes certainly the company statement will have the obligatory quote about "spending more time with my family." If not, it may be the first time in history when the sudden departure of an embattled CEO is attributed to "wanting to play more bridge" (not to mention one of the few times ever that such an explanation would actually be believed).
