Cadillac Escalade Hybrid
Hip-hop aficionados and other Escalade fans can save at the pump this summer with a V-8 hybrid version that should achieve close to 20 miles per gallon in city driving. First shown at Miami's auto show in November, the Escalade will be the third General Motors S.U.V. to adopt the new hybrid system, following the Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon.

Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid
First shown in Frankfurt last fall, the ML450 Hybrid goes on sale in 2009. It's designed to be the cleanest, highest-mileage midsize S.U.V. on the U.S. market. Using a gas-electric hybrid system developed jointly with G.M. and BMW, the ML450 is expected to deliver better than 30 m.p.g.

Volvo ReCharge
The ReCharge concept car is a plug-in, hybrid version of the chic C30 hatchback. The Volvo could deliver well over 100 m.p.g. It combines high-tech, powerful electric hub motors built directly into all four wheels; an efficient lithium-polymer battery pack; and a small diesel engine that could easily be switched for a gasoline or ethanol burner.

The twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder BMW engine—coming this fall in the 335d sedan and X5 35d sport-utility vehicle—is powerful yet clean and remarkably frugal. The diesel 3-Series should scoot from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 6.2 seconds, while delivering 33 m.p.g. on the highway.

Making its North American show debut in Detroit, the full-size S300 is billed by Mercedes as "the world's highest-mileage luxury sedan," achieving 44 highway m.p.g. with its four-cylinder diesel-hybrid power plant. European buyers will see the S300 in 2010; Americans will get a more-powerful V-6 gasoline hybrid version in 2009.

Audi R8 V12 TDI
Making its world debut in Detroit, this supercar nestles a turbocharged, 6.0-liter diesel engine behind driver and passenger, good for 500 horsepower and a mind-boggling 738 pound-feet of torque. Public reaction likely will determine the production fate of the diesel-driven R8, which Audi says would combine a 4.2-second dash from 0 to60 m.p.h. and a roughly 190-m.p.h. top speed with fuel economy of 23 m.p.g.
