Seat of Power
New York City and Birmingham, Alabama.
Humble Origins
Adolph Ochs bought the Chattanooga Times with a borrowed $250 down payment in 1878. John Harbert III launched Harbert Construction partly with gambling winnings in 1947.
Namesake Building
A chic 52-story Renzo Piano skyscraper in midtown Manhattan, left, is home to the Sulzberger empire. A gold granite 32-story office tower in downtown Birmingham is the home turf of Harbert fortune.

Matriarch
