The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Budget: $70 million.
Box Office Gross: $154.5 million.
Bottom Line: The movie version of the "chandelier" musical was a financial disappointment. But it did launch the film career of actress Emmy Rossum, and its onstage inspiration is still running.
The Producers (2005)
Budget: $45 million.
Box Office Gross: $37.9 million.
Bottom Line: Even casting Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, who both starred in the Broadway smash, couldn't save this much-ridiculed flick.
Dreamgirls (2006)
Budget: $75 million.
Box Office Gross: $154.8 million.
Bottom Line: Singer Beyoncé was the headliner, but her co-star Jennifer Hudson, of American Idol fame, received the accolades, including a 2007 Supporting Actress Oscar.
Hairspray (2007)
Budget: $75 million.
Box Office Gross: $200.5 million.
Bottom Line: The hit Broadway musical Hairspray was adapted from cult filmmaker John Waters' 1988 movie. The original film cost $2 million and grossed $6.6 million.
Sweeney Todd (2007)
Budget: $50 million.
Box Office Gross: $150.8 million.
Bottom Line: The dark, bloody film version won lots of Oscars but was not a monster hit.
