The Armory Show in New York
New York, March 27 to 30. This giant fair, at Manhattan's cavernous Pier 94, specializes in art by living artists. In recent years, attentive collectors could have bought works by Richard Prince, David LaChapelle, and Marlene Dumas for a third of current prices. Get there before the MOMA trustees.
Artropolis/Art Chicago
Chicago, April 25 to 28. Five concurrent art fairs, centered in Chicago's huge Merchandise Mart, take over the city each spring. Art Chicago recently hired Paul Morris, founder of the Armory Show, to increase traffic and raise the quality of the art.
The International Fine Art Fair
New York, May 9 to 14. This top-notch and pricey Park Avenue event—the opening benefits the Frick Collection—shows classics like Picassos, but its real draw is that it's a vetted fair, meaning that a panel of experts has authenticated all the objects on display.
The European Fine Art Show
Maastricht, the Netherlands, March 7 to 16. The world's foremost fair, this metropolis of art and antiques, now in its 21st year, has recently ratcheted up its selection of contemporary art. But good buys still include drawings by old masters and their students, plus Fabergé and European furniture.
Art Dubai
Dubai, March 19 to 22. Dealers from a dozen nations are flocking to Art Dubai, betting that higher oil prices will create a generation of Middle Eastern collectors. Held in a venue styled after an ancient Arabian citadel in Dubai's Disney-like resort region, the fair will sell wares ranging from Modern to conceptual art.
Artforum
Berlin, October 3 to 6. Berlin's exploding art scene has made Artforum a magnet for serious collectors. A host of English-language seminars and lectures helps bring new buyers up to speed.
The Frieze Art Fair
London, October 16 to 19. Trend spotters favor this fair, with its emphasis on cutting-edge contemporary art. Last year, a group of Russian collectors circled the floor, buying in bulk.
