Producing the average gold wedding band creates some 20 tons of toxic waste, including cyanide and mercury. But Ingle & Rhode’s jewelry contains gold processed in environmentally friendly ways, and the diamonds are from Argentine mines that are under environmental regulations. Fancy-colored cultured diamonds are created without mining, and the platinum is 100 percent recycled.

Vivètique mattresses are made from organic cotton and do not contain dye or bleach. The company, founded in 2002, claims that it has decreased its carbon footprint by 80 percent, and it sells only to environmentally friendly suppliers like Environmental Depot and Greenhome.com. “We make sure that our suppliers know more than just environmental buzzwords,” says vice president Scott Carwile.

Memberships starts around $202,500

Destination club Quintess, affiliated with Leading Residences of the World, allows members access to luxury homes in more than 30 locations. For each night in a residence, it will donate $1.50 to Sustainable Travel International, so that S.T.I. can purchase carbon offsets for the two hundred pounds of carbon dioxide released by each guest each day.

New luxury denim brand Sharkah Chakra Denim makes its garments from 100 percent organic cotton and uses a natural indigo dyeing process that produces less sludge waste than synthetic dyeing. Craftsmen weave the cloth by hand on authentic wooden selvage looms. “Hand-woven goods are the original luxury item. Life is about simplicity,” says founder Sara Simmonds.
