Who's the Boss?
He may be the face of the New York Yankees, but Steinbrenner grew up in Ohio as a Cleveland Indians fan. Now, at age 77, he attends his club's games less frequently.
The Boss and His Lady
George married Joan Zeig, the daughter of an Ohio real estate tycoon, in 1956. The two met at Ohio State while she was a dental-hygiene student and he was working on his master's in phys ed.
The Inner Circle
Tom McEwen, onetime sports editor of the Tampa Tribune, with Steinbrenner, legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant, and Steinbrenner's friend John McCary on a Florida golf course in 1979. McEwen and Steinbrenner have been golfing buddies since 1973, the year the Boss bought the Yankees and moved his family from Cleveland to Tampa, Florida.
Pretender to the Throne?
Steinbrenner with son-in-law Steve Swindal, a Yankees general partner who was once seen as the designated heir. Swindal was arrested on Valentine's Day for allegedly driving under the influence and is now divorcing his way out of the team hierarchy. His biggest accomplishment was his negotiation of manager Joe Torre's three-year, $19.2 million contract extension in 2004.
The New Yankee Stadium
A scale model of the new $1 billion stadium, next door to the old stadium. The Yankees will cover 80 percent of the construction costs and receive a $44 million tax break.
Damon and the Yankees
Johnny Damon signed on with the Yankees to be their new center fielder in December 2005. Damon was snatched from the Yankees' rivals, the Boston Red Sox. Damon is shown (center) with C.O.O. Lonn Trost, Joe Torre, Brian Cashman, and Yankees president Randy Levine.
