J. Barry Griswell has been a Director of the Company since 2001 and of Principal Life since 1998, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Company and Principal Life since June of 2006. Prior to that, he had been Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company since 2002, Chief Executive Officer of the Company since April 2001,and President and Chief Executive Officer of Principal Life since 2000. He is a Chartered Life Underwriter, a Chartered Financial Consultant and a LIMRA Leadership Institute Fellow. Mr. Griswell is also a director of Herman Miller, Inc., a public company that is an office furnishings designer and manufacturer. He is a trustee of Central College and of Berry College. He is Chairman of the Business Committee for the Arts and a board member of the Business Roundtable. He is a trustee of the United Way of America board, and Chair of the United Way of America National Tocqueville Council. He is Chairman of the Board of the Company and Principal Life.
