Doreen A. Toben is executive vice president and chief financial officer for Verizon, a position she has held since April 2002. She is responsible for Verizon's finance and strategic planning efforts. Prior to her current assignment, Toben was senior vice president and chief financial officer, with responsibility for finance and strategic planning for Verizon's Domestic Telecom Group. At the time of the Bell Atlantic / GTE merger in July 2000, creating Verizon, Toben was vice president and controller for Bell Atlantic. Previously, Toben was vice president and chief financial officer - Telecom / Network, for Bell Atlantic. Prior to the Bell Atlantic / NYNEX merger in August 1997, Toben was vice president - Finance and controller of Bell Atlantic, a position she held since December 1995. Prior to that, she was vice president - Corporate Finance. Toben began her career in 1983 at AT&T in treasury and served in positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of finance and strategic planning there, and subsequently at Bell Atlantic. In 1986, Toben moved to Bell Atlantic - Pennsylvania, where she held a number of leadership positions in equipment engineering, operations, and small business and consumer market management. In 1992 she was named assistant vice president-comptroller at Bell Atlantic-New Jersey. Toben was appointed their chief financial officer in 1993. Toben holds an A.B. in political science from Rosemont College and an M.B.A. in finance and marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University. On April 14, 2004, Toben was elected to the Board of The New York Times Company. She was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Center on March 29, 2004. Toben joined the National Advisory Board of J. P. Morgan Chase & Co. on June 30, 2003. In September 2003, she was ranked 17th, up from 25th in 2002, in Fortune Magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business", an annual list featuring the most influential women in corporate America. Born in Curaçao and raised in Harding Township, New Jersey, Toben resides with her husband, Ed, and their two children in Princeton, New Jersey.
