Jetzer graduated with master's degrees in law and economics from the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, and is a licensed attorney. From 1967 to 1980, he served as General Secretary of the Swiss Federation of Commerce and Industry (Vorort). Alexandre F. Jetzer joined Sandoz in 1980. In 1981, he was appointed member of the Sandoz Group Executive Committee in his capacity as Chief Financial Officer. In 1990, he became Head of Management Resources and International Coordination. From 1995 to 1996, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation in East Hanover, New Jersey, and at the same time served as President and CEO of Sandoz Corporation in New York. After the merger which created Novartis in 1996 until 1999, he was Head of International Coordination, Legal & Taxes and a member of the Executive Committee of Novartis.
