Texas Instruments Collaborates with VirtualLogix to Provide System Software Building Blocks for New Access Network Equipment
Texas Instruments and VirtualLogix Help Base Station OEMs Introducing New Capabilities While Preserving Investments
DALLAS & SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct 08, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE:TXN) and VirtualLogix(TM),
Inc., the Real-Time Virtualization(TM) company,
today announced they have collaborated to deliver the first software
solution that introduces control- and management-plane capability to TI
digital signal processors (DSPs) targeted for wireless base stations.
This new capability enables base station original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) to use TI's latest
powerful DSPs beyond the traditional data-plane functions to create
next-generation access network equipment. With this offering OEMs can
optimize the production and maintenance costs of their computing
platforms for new 3G, WiMax or LTE base stations. This solution
leverages existing and proven VirtualLogix VLX virtualization and Linux
products tailored for the advanced TI DSP C6000 core architecture.
According to Hans Wahlquist, Business Development and Sales Executive of
TietoEnator, a leading Sweden-based IT service company that has
implemented the combined VirtualLogix and TI solution, "By
adding VLX and Linux software we have been able to demonstrate that our
Operation and Management (O&M) middleware can be easily deployed on TI
single and multicore DSPs. The integration and the necessary adaptations
of the middleware were smooth and simple, only requiring minor efforts."
In recent years, Texas Instruments DSP customers have sought to expand
the use of the processors for non-DSP tasks, such as MAC layer
processing in mobile radio standards. Recognizing the need for flexible
software deployment to meet these demands, Texas Instruments and
VirtualLogix have collaborated to expand the TI DSP offering and enable
OEMs to create system-level solutions for current and future
applications in mobile networks. VirtualLogix real-time virtualization
software allows the introduction of Linux without an additional host
processor. In addition, the solution reduces complex testing and
re-validation, increases design flexibility and performance and protects
existing software investments.
"Texas Instruments is committed to helping our
customers to keep pace with the innovations constantly breaking through
in the industry, and delivering products that support these
advancements, including the expanded use of our DSPs in base station
equipment," said Josef Alt, Business
Development Manager Communication Infrastructure, Texas Instruments. "By
combining VirtualLogix VLX with our DSP offering, we have been able to
include Linux functionality and help evolve DSP technology into new
spaces, ensuring that our mutual customers can add advanced networking
features while leveraging the real-time performance of TI's
DSP/BIOS kernel."
"VLX and Linux are key to creating new
application areas for TI DSPs," said Didier
Irlande, Senior Marketing Manager, VirtualLogix. "TI's
DSP multicore processors have offered unprecedented functionality since
they were introduced last year and this latest offering further
underscores TI's commitment to its customers.
We are pleased to support this latest offering with this combined
solution and its compelling value proposition and look forward to
helping to drive the future of access network equipment."
