Macy's, Inc. 11th Annual Bag Hunger: 30 Million Pounds of Food Given in National Campaign
With Schools Out for Summer, Hunger Emerges
CINCINNATI, Jul 10, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:M) store and support divisions today announced
their 11th annual Partners in Time "Bag Hunger" summer national food
campaign, benefiting many affiliates of America's Second Harvest - The
Nation's Food Bank Network, the largest domestic hunger-relief charity
in the United States. The problem of children's hunger is more acute
during summer months when millions of children lose access to free and
reduced-price school breakfast and lunch programs.
Through the Macy's, Inc. Partners in Time volunteer program,
employees in department store and support divisions in 225 cities
organize food collections in an effort to "Bag Hunger" for hungry
children. Local beneficiaries include:
-- Atlanta Community Food Bank
-- Cincinnati: FreeStore/FoodBank
-- Community Food Bank of Tucson
-- Food Bank of South Central Michigan
-- Food Bank of The Rockies
-- Greater Boston Food Bank
-- Greater Chicago Food Depository
-- Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
-- Hawaii Food Bank
-- Houston: End Hunger Network
-- Los Angeles Regional Food Bank
-- Miami: Daily Bread Food Bank
-- New York City: City Harvest
-- Oregon Food Bank
-- Palm Beach County: Daily Bread
-- Philadelphia: Philabundance
-- San Francisco Food Bank
-- St. Louis Area Food Bank
-- St. Paul, MN: Second Harvest Heartland
-- Second Harvest Food Bank Tampa Bay
-- Washington, D.C.: Capital Area Food Bank
-- West Texas Food Bank
Since the project began in 1998, volunteers have collected food
and equivalent donations to total more than 15,000 tons, or 30.1
million pounds, providing nearly 47 million meals for hungry families
nationwide. Macy's, Bloomingdale's and Macy's, Inc. support division
employees will provide a direct benefit to some of the 25 million
Americans - including 9 million children - served by America's Second
Harvest and other food networks.
The company's divisional chief financial officers take on the
additional role of "Chief Food Officers" for this effort, challenging
their respective divisions to surpass prior year contributions. Each
year, the Macy's Foundation gives $10,000 in the names of the
divisions to their local hunger-relief agency partners.
Including "Bag Hunger," Macy's, Bloomingdale's and support
division volunteers gave community service time valued at $2.7 million
last year and the company's national charitable giving totaled more
than $35 million.
"Our company has an ongoing commitment to community involvement,
giving both time and contributions," said Karen Hoguet, executive vice
president and chief financial officer of Macy's, Inc. "Bag Hunger is
the largest, and one of the favorite, national projects that our
employee volunteers develop each year. In addition to providing food,
employees also share their time to make a difference, helping hunger
relief agencies pack, sort and distribute food."
"Our food banks are currently experiencing an unprecedented demand
for emergency food. They report that the agencies they serve are
seeing new faces show up for help - many of whom are working parents,
desperate to feed their families," said Vicki B. Escarra, president
and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "More than 17 million children
receive free and reduced priced meals at school, but when summer
comes, most of the programs close down - leaving these children and
their families struggling to find adequate, nutritious food. We are
especially grateful to Macy's and Bloomingdale's for their continued
commitment to fight against child hunger, especially now when the need
is so great."
