Overview
Forgotten Harvest works hard to eliminate both hunger and waste in metro Detroit. Each day our 14 refrigerated trucks and vans travel all over Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties rescuing perishable food from a variety of Health-Department approved sources. Perfectly edible, nutritious food that was destined for a landfill is delivered free of charge to over 135 emergency food providers. The people we serve are as diverse as the community around us young and old, from all races and faiths. The common bond uniting them and Forgotten Harvest is hunger. Forgotten Harvest operates under the direction of a volunteer Board and a dedicated but minimal staff. It is funded by individual, business, and corporate contributions, grants, foundations, trusts and fundraising events. All donations to Forgotten Harvest are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Forgotten Harvest currently transports more than 708,000 pounds of food each month to soup kitchens and shelters. According to food industry standards (1 pound=1 meal), this is equivalent to more than 8.5 million meals per year.
