ReplayTV
Seventeen years ago, Anthony Wood dreamed up a device that would capture every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. His invention, a personal video recorder called ReplayTV, hit the market in 1999. Disney, NBC, Showtime, and others sued for copyright violations and loss of ad revenue. D&M Holdings purchased ReplayTV’s assets for $36 million and stripped the product of its controversial features. In December, DirectTV acquired the brand for its technology and patents and stopped accepting new ReplayTV customers. Current subscribers still number in the thousands.
