Renaissance Malibu Treatment Center

This intense treatment center takes only 12 clients at a time and requires a minimum 30-day stay (which runs $40,000 to $50,000). Located in a converted ocean-view Malibu home, the center treats professional clients—doctors, lawyers, Hollywood producers, and business execs—with traditional therapies including group counseling, 12-step programs, and psychopharmacology, as well as nature walks, yoga, and equine therapy.

Sierra Tucson

Founded 23 years ago to treat addiction, mood and anxiety disorders, and eating disorders as well as aid in sexual-abuse and trauma recovery and pain management, Sierra Tucson is known for equine therapy and integrating Western treatments like 12-step recovery programs with such Eastern therapies as qigong. The daily rate for its program is $1,285; patients—mainly professionals in law, medicine, and entertainment—must stay at least 30 days.

Silver Hill Hospital

This facility has been treating patients for psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse in New Canaan, Connecticut, since 1931, specializing in clients diagnosed with both disorders. Silver Hill emphasizes meetings between family members of patients and clinical staff. Inpatient cost is about $1,500 per day. Among those rumored to have undergone treatment at Silver Hill are Truman Capote, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Joan Kennedy, Liza Minnelli, and Diana Ross.

Caron Treatment Centers

This self-christened “Magic mountain” in Pennsylvania was created by industrialist Richard J. Caron 50 years ago and treats about 120 executives a year, from leading financial-services executives to small-business owners. It also has a special therapy group geared to businesspeople. The campus includes a business center but forbids mobile devices. A monthlong stay is $25,000.

Betty Ford Center

The grande dame of addiction-treatment centers, in Rancho Mirage, California, was created specifically to meet the needs of women. It offers a 90-day treatment program for licensed professionals for $38,000, but the standard inpatient package is 30 days for $23,000 and is based on a 12-step recovery program. The Betty Ford Center is known for its celebrity clientele, including Billy Joel and Keith Urban. Professional interventionists are available.

Crossroads Centre Antigua

Eric Clapton’s residential treatment center was founded in 1997 and is based on the 12-step program. The center offers a four-day family program and a one-week recovery-renewal program. A 29-day treatment runs $19,500. Patients include executives from business, law, health care, and entertainment who seek treatment outside their countries to avoid notes on their permanent medical records. Americans make up most of Crossroads’ client base, with increasing numbers coming from Europe.

Cirque Lodge

The lodge comprises a private mountain retreat in Sundance, Utah, and a substance-abuse center at the foot of Mount Timpanogos. Cirque offers personalized therapies for prescription-drug, heroin, and marijuana addiction. It houses the world’s largest indoor ropes course and features fireplaces or wood-burning stoves in bedrooms, Jacuzzis in bathrooms, and an indoor horse arena. The cost per day at the Sundance lodge is $1,495; at the studio, $995; the minimum stay is 30 days. Executives have bunked alongside alleged clients David Hasselhoff, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Lindsay Lohan.
