On the Cusp of Holidays, More Toy Recalls

Chinese-made toys recalled for containing date-rape drug.

Parents who were already worried about which toys in the chest might be tainted with lead paint now have another item to add to the worry list just before the holiday season.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 4.2 million Chinese-made toys called Aqua Dots because they contain chemicals that convert into the date-rape drug gamma hydroxy butyrate when ingested.

Two children in the U.S. became comatose after accidentally swallowing the small beads. Three children in Australia were also stricken by ingesting the same product, and Australian officials have also recalled the toy.

Aqua Dots are arts-and-crafts toys consisting of small beads that fuse together when sprayed with water. The product is manufactured in China and distributed by Spin Master of Toronto, Canada.

Earlier this year, Mattel recalled 21 million toys made in China because of potentially dangerous levels of lead in their paint.
