Chinese-Made Cribs Recalled

Regulators say faulty design, not shoddy manufacturing, is to blame for entrapments, deaths.
Crib recall

On the same day that Mattel issued an extraordinary apology to China over the recall of Chinese-made toys, U.S. regulators have announced a voluntary recall of about one million Chinese-made baby cribs.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission ordered the recall after the cribs, branded Simplicity and Graco, were linked to at least two infant deaths.

The C.P.S.C. is also aware of seven infant entrapments and 55 incidents in these cribs, and is investigating the additional death of a 1-year-old child in a Simplicity crib.

The commission said on Friday that both deaths were confirmed as being the result of hardware installed incorrectly by consumers. That made it sound more like a design problem than an issue of shoddy manufacturing.

Earlier today, Mattel took blame for design flaws in its products and said it had recalled more lead-tainted toys than was justified.
