Walt Disney plans to begin testing all of the products made for its characters for lead paint, after Mattel recalled millions of toys made in China for that reason this summer.

The move is significant because Disney does not manufacture its own toys. Instead, it licenses its characters to toymakers like Mattel, who are responsible for the quality control of the products. Disney will inform the toymakers today, according to the New York Times.

"It sends the message that we are looking over their shoulders," Andy Mooney, the chairman of Disney’s consumer products division, told the Times.

Disney expects the testing will cost several million dollars annually, and it may pass the costs on to its licensors. It will begin by conducting random tests of products already on shelves, including toys, jewelry and furniture.

Also this week, the Times reports, Toys "R" Us will begin randomly testing products sold in its stores for dangerous levels of toxins.
