Apple Unveils Next-Generation iPod
Meet the iPod Touch
Apple unveiled a raft of new and updated iPod products today, at San Francisco press event called "The Beat Goes On."
Steve Jobs' biggest announcement of the day was the introduction of an iPod with a touchscreen, according to New York Times 'Bits' weblog, which covered the event live.
The iPod model looks similar to an iPhone, and in addition to the multi-touch screen, will come complete with Safari Web browser and new WiFi capabilities.
The new model will be available later this month, at a cost of $299 for an 8 gigabytes and $399 for a 16 gigabyte version.
Jobs also revealed that Apple will cut the price of the iPhone by $200, just a little over two months after the blockbuster product was launched. Apple will now charge $399 instead of $599 for the high-end version.
Also announced at the event were updates to existing iPod models. A new version of the Nano model is thinner yet, will be available in five colors, and will play games such as a Sudoko program . The 4 gigabyte version will retail for $149 and the 8 gigabyte for $199.
The company also announced an update to its iTunes software that would allow customers to convert downloaded songs into ringtones, and sync them with the iPhone. The cost of the ringtone conversion will be 99 cents per use, in addition to the 99 cents charged to download each song.
