More Bad Toys From Mattel

Mattel announced a second major recall of toys made in China with potentially excessive levels of lead paint and hazardous magnets.

The company will recall 436,000 of its die-cast Sarge cars that were made between May and July of this year because of "impermissible levels of lead." This recall was prompted by Mattel's investigation following its August 1 recall of 1.5 million Chinese-manufactured preschool toys for the same reason.

Additionally, the toymaker is recalling certain magnetic items manufactured between 2002 and 2007 because they are potentially harmful if swallowed by children. They include versions of the Polly Pocket, Doggie Day Care, Batman, One Piece, and Barbie brands.

The company recalled certain magnetic toys last November. In January of this year, it implemented improved magnetic-retention systems in all of its toys.

The total number of toys recalled today globally by Mattel is more than 18 million. However, the company says, the majority of the magnetic toys are no longer in retail stores.

"The safety of children is our primary concern, and we are deeply apologetic to everyone affected," said Robert Eckert, C.E.O. of Mattel. "Mattel has rigorous procedures, and we will continue to be vigilant and unforgiving in enforcing quality and safety. We don't want to have recalls, but we don't hesitate to take quick and effective action to correct issues as soon as we've identified them to ensure the safety of our products and the safety of children."

Mattel earlier said it would take a $30 million charge relating to its first recall.
