Uruguayan gets nearly 3 years in suitcase scandal

A Uruguayan man has been sentenced by a judge in Miami to nearly three years in prison for his role in a political scandal involving a cash-stuffed suitcase.

A federal judge handed down the sentence Monday against 41-year-old Rodolfo Wanseele (Wahn-SEE'-lee). The Florida man had pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal Venezuelan agent in the U.S.

Prosecutors said Wanseele was involved in an attempt by Venezuelan officials to cover up the source of a suitcase containing $800,000, which was seized last year in Argentina. They say Wanseele was the driver and lookout during a meeting between a Venezuelan intelligence agent and an FBI informant.

Three Venezuelan men also have been convicted in the case.
