Nebraska's unemployment rate unchanged in November

Nebraska officials say the state unemployment rate in November was unchanged from the revised October rate of 3.7 percent.

The Nebraska Department of Labor said in a report Wednesday that the rate is 0.4 percent higher than the rate in November 2007.

The estimated October rate of 3.6 percent reported on Dec. 2 was revised to the seasonally adjusted rate of 3.7 percent.

The national unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent in November, which is 2 percentage points higher than November 2007.

For Lincoln, the estimated unemployment rate rose 0.2 percent, to 3.1 percent in November. That's 0.4 percent higher than November 2007.

For Omaha, the estimated November rate of 3.7 percent was 0.2 percent higher than the 3.5 percent rate in October. The rate has risen 0.4 percent since November last year.

Omaha and Lincoln unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted and are not compared with the state unemployment rate.

State Labor Commissioner Catherine Lang said the southeast Nebraska had the state's biggest rise in its unemployment rate - 0.6 percent. She blamed that on layoffs in manufacturing.

Lang also announced that the state had added a new feature on her department's Web site. The new "Layoff Report" can be sorted by month and quarter and shows the numbers reported by Nebraska employers.

The department report said Nebraska has added 1,565 jobs since November 2007. The top three private growth sectors over the 12 months are leisure and hospitality (2,173); educational and health services (2,147); and financial activities (1,169).

The state also said manufacturing workers put in an average 42.4 hours a week in November, which is nine-tenths of an hour more than October and a half hour more than November 2007.
