Conspiracy charges brought against Mass. officials

Prosecutors say a former Massachusetts state senator and a Boston city councilor conspired to accept a bribe from a businessman in exchange for a liquor license.

A conspiracy charge was added Tuesday to an indictment against former state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson. She pleaded not guilty Monday to eight counts of attempted extortion for allegedly accepting $23,500 in bribes to help arrange the license.

Prosecutors say Wilkerson conspired on the deal with Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner. He was formally indicted Tuesday on one count of attempted extortion for allegedly accepting a $1,000 bribe and three counts of giving false statements to FBI agents.

Turner denies wrongdoing.

Calls to their attorneys were not immediately returned.
