Shares of gold-mining companies opened mostly higher Tuesday as the price of the commodity jumped in U.S. trading.

The price of gold for August delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange surged $11.80 to $940.10 per ounce.

How some gold miners are trading:

Goldcorp Inc. rose $1.13, or 2.5 percent, to $47.30

Gold Fields Ltd. rose 16 cents to $12.81.

Newmont Mining Corp. rose 86 cents to $53.02.

Barrick Gold Corp. rose 66 cents to $46.16.
