Closing Glance: Rails, shippers fall as oil spikes

Shares of railroads and shippers lost ground Thursday as oil spiked above $10 per barrel and the Dow Jones Industrials Average lost more than 350 points.

In industry news, the Association of American Railroads said shipments carried by U.S. railroads last week fell 5.7 percent from last year, as Midwest floods continued to hurt the industry.

Here's how major railroads and shippers finished:

Union Pacific Corp., down $1.89, or 2.5 percent, to $72.99.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., down $2.54, or 2.5 percent, to $97.92.

CSX Corp., down $1.85, or 2.9 percent, to $61.38.

FedEx Corp., down $1.68, or 2.1 percent, to $78.09, after earlier hitting a 2-year low of $77.93.

United Parcel Service Inc., down $1.52, or 4.5 percent, to $59.88, after dropping to a 5-year low of $59.83.
