Slip Sliding   

Stocks fell for a second day. Standard & Poor's cut its ratings outlook on General Electric to "negative" and G.E. shares slid. Shares of energy companies declined as the price of crude oil continued to fall. And automotive shares were down sharply. Oh, yeah, where is that auto bailout?  Exactly.

Jobless Claims Jump   

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits surged 58,000 last week to 573,000, the highest level since 1982.
