TED Flash: Pangea Day Set for May 10

When documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim won a TED Prize in 2006, her wish was nothing if not ambitious. She wished for world peace.

To translate that noble goal into a practical program, Pangea Day was founded.

The goal of Pangea Day — named for the supercontinent that scientists believe contained all earth's land about 250 million years ago — is to use cinema to encourage tolerance and compassion and to unite people to build a better future.

Pangea Day seeks to look beyond borders, race, religion, class, and conflict, and remember what we all have in common.

To that end, on Pangea Day — May 10 — a four-hour videoconference will connect people in Cairo, Dharamsala, Kigali, London, New York, Ramallah, Rio de Janeiro, and Tel Aviv. They will watch powerful films together, listen to visionary speakers, and enjoy uplifting music.

The program will be broadcast live to the world through the internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.

Afterwards, Pangea Day organizers will introduce inspired viewers to established community-building organizations that can use their skills, enthusiasm, and money to improve the world in big and small ways.
