On the Razr's Edge

PREV 4 of 4

CNP: The price for Navteq was stunning: Nokia paid more than $8 billion.

ZANDER: God bless them, but that's just crazy.

CNP: What can you tell us about the alleged Google phone?

ZANDER: I'm not going to tell you what I know, obviously.

CNP: Do you still talk with Eric Schmidt?

ZANDER: Yeah. We stay in touch.

CNP: What does he tell you about Google's phone plans?

ZANDER: This is not hard to figure out. Imagine a device that knows exactly where I am in the world, knows my preferences, knows whether I like Starbucks and where I like to shop. The advertising model then becomes way more compelling. The United States government is about to allocate a new spectrum that is going to make it possible to have very economical WiMax technology or broadband internet. With that, you have new business models and new entrants—such as, potentially, Google—turning handhelds into a new way to get voice, data, and internet access.

CNP: Do you wish Motorola had the iPhone?

ZANDER: I have nothing but respect for Apple, but we did touchscreens with handwriting recognition in China three years ago. We, as an industry, tried touchscreens in the U.S. several years ago, and it didn't work. A lot of Americans don't like them.

CNP: What device do you use?

ZANDER: A Moto Q when I'm working. When I go out at night, I may have a Razr2. Eventually, you'll have one SIM card for your mobile devices, and when you plug that card in, it will recognize the device and shut off all your other devices. I think many of our customers will buy multiple devices, depending on the applications they want, and they'll have one phone number that works for all of them.

CNP: Or so you hope.

ZANDER: Yeah.
