Whisky Blender bottles

Two years ago, a couple of “fairly well lubricated” Scotsmen were chatting in a small village on the west coast of Scotland, just a stone’s throw from the poet Robert Burns' home. In the midst of the drunken rumination, they struck upon an idea: Start a website called Whisky Blender selling blended versions of their national drink, Scotch, and let the customers do the blending and naming.

“We wanted to create something to allow people a simple way to own a unique bottle of blended Scotch whisky; one which they’ve not only had a say into how it tastes and what it’s called, but also to have a little bit of fun in the process,” cofounder Drew Nicolson, 28, told the Whisky Times.

From a selection of seven whiskies, customers digitally fill an empty bottle in the online lab and name the whisky any darn thing they want—such as the Charlie Brown and the Go Sit in the Truck Blends. Handwritten, quick, beautiful labels are slapped on the glass bottle, along with a “bottled on” date, and they are shipped anywhere the law permits.

Nicolson and cofounder Andy Davidson, 27, have been proud Scotch-drinking friends for the past 10 years, but it was just this past November when the duo finally launched the venture, and they did so without a single external monetary investment.

“You can have as many colleagues as you like,” Davidson told Portfolio.com, with a slight hint of derision at the word colleagues. “But it really needs to be friends if you want to do it on a shoestring.”

Davidson’s first “proper” job (when reading proper, hear a thick Scottish accent) was in a wine shop, and it was there that he developed an interest in the art of the spirits, not to mention making a couple of those ever-so-helpful friends and business partners.
