John Cassidy

economics columnist

John Cassidy is a Contributing Editor at Condé Nast Portfolio and writes the monthly Economics column.

Cassidy is also a staff writer at The New Yorker where he has been since 1995. He has written more than 50 articles for the magazine, on topics ranging from Alan Greenspan to the Iraqi oil industry and English journalism. Two of his articles have been nominated for National Magazine Awards: an essay on Karl Marx, which appeared in October, 1997, and an account of the death of the British weapons scientist David Kelly, which was published in December, 2003.
 
Cassidy came to The New Yorker after working for newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic. He joined the Sunday Times in London in 1986, and served as the paper's Washington bureau chief for three years, and then as its business editor, from 1991 to 1993. From 1993 to 1995, he was at the New York Post, where he edited the Business section and then served as the deputy editor. In 2002, Cassidy published his first book, Dot.Con: How America Lost its Mind and Money in the Internet Era.
