The Business Journal this week published a list of Silicon Valley electrical contractors, ranked by the total number of electricians based in the region.
Information was obtained from company representatives. Here is a sneak peek of the top five.
In order for a company to be considered for the list, the total number of electricians in the valley must be provided. The top five electrical contractors reportedly have over 2,000 electricians employed in the valley. The top five have over 4,500 electricians employed companywide...

Chinese tech giant Huawei grew by being a “fast follower,” John Roese, general manager of the company’s North American R&D division, told me when I visited its Santa Clara campus recently.
The company, best known for making telecom equipment, looked at what its competitors were doing and followed them producing product at a lower cost.
“That worked really well up until a few years ago,” Roese said. “There’s this problem that occurs when suddenly you’re actually bigger than the people you were chasing, and that’s what happened with Huawei...

When high-profile politicians take a $1 salary, it’s often because they’re already worth millions, if not billions, of dollars, and they want to be seen as thrifty with others’ money.
When CEOs take the same wage, it’s often for the same stated reasons — yet they can reap millions, if not billions, from their company in other ways.
In Silicon Valley, the club of $1 CEOs is small, but it includes many household names: Hewlett-Packard’s Meg Whitman, Oracle’s Larry Ellison, and the Google guys, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt...

Every few years, Palo Alto’s commercial real estate market goes through a shuffle of sorts.
A startup moves in to a small downtown Palo Alto office or lab and gradually outgrows the space and is forced to move out. If it gets lucky and there’s large space available in Palo Alto (often at Stanford Research Park), then they snag it. If not, the startup has no choice but to go elsewhere to satisfy their space requirements.
Cloud content management provider Box.net is an example of a company that couldn’t find what it was looking for in Palo Alto and ended up landing in nearby Los Altos last year...

More than half of the nation's major markets are experiencing an upswing in manufacturing activity. The increases are generally small, yet they're welcome news after several years of declines.
Detroit is leading the way. It added 11,400 jobs to its manufacturing base last year, according to an On Numbers analysis of figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Four other metropolitan areas picked up at least 5,000 manufacturing jobs in 2011: Houston (up 8,400), Seattle (up 7,200), Cincinnati (up 5,200) and San Jose (up 5,100)...

The number of homes sold in metro Denver in January climbed from the same month in 2011, according to a report on Metrolist Inc. data released Thursday.
There were 2,470 single family homes, including condominiums, sold in January, which is up 15 percent from the 2,156 sold in January 2011, according to Gary Bauer, an independent, Littleton-based real estate broker and Metrolist analyst.
That number represented a 22 percent drop from the 3,156 homes sold in December, but it’s not usual for December to have higher-than-average numbers in the year-end rush to close deals, Bauer said...

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, on his second day in Sacramento, joined Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson at the Sacramento Valley Station, which is served today by Amtrak and central to the future development of a 240-acre Sacramento railyard project.
Construction was ongoing at the site during LaHood’s visit Thursday as crews work to relocate and realign about 2.3 miles of Union Pacific railroad track to make room for an expanded Sacramento Valley Station. The station will be turned into an intermodal hub that will handle Amtrak and Capitol Corridor service as well as light rail and bus services...

The saga involving the recently shut-down Hawaii Medical Center hospitals will continue Friday with a hearing on a bill to issue an $80 million special purpose revenue bond to St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii to refurbish the two hospitals and get them ready for potential new owners.
The $80 million special purpose revenue bond provided for in House Bill 2345 would be used by St. Francis to renovate the hospital buildings, upgrade the courtyard and parking garage, modernize technology and equipment and refinance debt at both the East and West campuses...
