Hello and welcome to the first of many installments of my adventures in navigating through the opportunities of a lifetime that seem to occur on an almost a daily basis.
British Airways was kind enough to offer some of Entrepreneurs Organization (hereto forth known as EO) members a few seats on a flight to London in November and then tickets to anywhere that they would like to go to do business "face to face."
The one person in the whole world that I knew I had to see about social media was in Amsterdam. That's a lame use of a ticket to go anywhere in the world, however, focus is my theme of the year and, well, I'm in Amsterdam.
Now back to the beginning...
The second that we stepped into the British Airways lounge in Chicago's O'Hare International airport, I knew that there would be no sleep for 24 hours. The rooms buzzed with the energy of ideas and new relationships created with like-minded people. I was introduced to several people, returned the favors, and made my way around only a very small triangle of conversations. Throughout the afternoon I made plans to meet with some of these new friends face to face in the future. As I listened to people spouting about their passions, I spouted right back, and we flooded the room with ideas, dreams, and ambitions to revolutionize nearly every sector of business, government, and philanthropy.
Focus. I want a speaking gig at the EO University in California this spring. The man who can make that happen is in the room. We connect. Game on.
We continued chatting while boarding the plane. Unfortunately I was going to sit by somebody else that I didn't know. That somebody I ended up talking with for hours, we hung out in London, he invited me to meet with the EO London board, dinner, and so on. We now have plans to discuss business face to face in New York in December. I love the ease with which we all connected and how one conversation flowed into another into another for days.
At the end of the trip to London, I was doubting the necessity of the remainder of my travels which took me to Barcelona and Amsterdam. This portion so far was incredibly fruitful, I felt like I met exactly who I was supposed to, and things couldn't get any better.
There were four of us who went on to Barcelona together and stayed in an apartment through an EO connection. Then through another EO connection we were introduced to the directors of a government agency that has an incubator for entrepreneurs in a special development section in town. We got a tour of the facilities and were informed that if we were to start a business in Barcelona that we could qualify for reduced rent for three years in this special incubator. The thought that went into the planning of this agency and its projects is like nothing I've seen before. They have a media quarter that houses Europe's largest sports media firm as well as a media university right next to it, student housing, shopping, restaurants, all in one location. This gave me a new perspective on how to partner with somebody in Spain.
